The Shoe Factory
The Giesecke-D’Oench-Hays Shoe Factory is loacated at 1101 East Capitol Avenue in Jefferson City, Missouri and is locally significant in the area of Industry. It was built in 1905 by the Giesecke-D’Oench-Hays Shoe Company and served as a shoe factory continuously until 1970. Giesecke-D’Oench-Hays Shoe Company was absorbed by Friedman-Shelby Shoe Company in 1910. Freidman-Shelby was in turn acquired in 1912 by International Shoe Company in St. Louis, the largest shoe manufacturer in the United States. International Shoe named this property the Main Street Factory, as Capitol Avenue was originally known as Main Street. The large building is significant for its association with Jefferson City’s shoe manufacturing industry. Jefferson City was one of the largest producers of footwear in the state of Missouri from the late nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century.
In 2019 Stitt Barony purchased this vacant building and began the work to stabilize the building. Although work is being done on the building to stabillize we are still developing the plans as to what we are going to do with it. So stay tuned, we will update this site with its progress.
